It’s been a busy month in the business of writing, with not a lot of actual writing done. I tend to fixate on one task at a time which translates often into focusing on one project at a time. With the Kickstarter ending that’s meant I’ve been focusing on getting all the fulfillment infrastructure set up and physical goods ordered. There’s a part of me that likes it, learning new things, because that part of me wants to know everything there is to know. I accumulate skills like a raven does shiny objects. The biggest time investment was producing the Badlands Born audio commentaries. Apart from the obvious work of writing a script, recording, re-recording, and editing (which isn’t trivial, I assure you), I discovered something: I write zombie books. You knew that, of course, and I sort of did too, but because I never set out to write the typical zombie book, I never thought of the stories as part of the zombie genre. But there’s no denying the whole series revolves as much around the deaders as it does the living. I’ve built up a deader history, magic system, economy, and evolution into each story that made me realize they’re the ones driving change in the Badlands and Dreaming Sands. I’ve even made the latest heroes deaders, for Twin’s sake! Pretty obvious, really. What can I say? It’s the difference between typing out the stories at a relatively glacial pace and a reader’s speedy clip. It’s easier to see the bigger picture when you’re not focused on the details or even a single book. The commentaries are done, I’ve had my insight, and so now it’s back to writing. |
